Jim Smith is president of Avnet Logistics, which provides specialized supply chain and logistics services for the global electronic components industry. Mr. Smith oversees more than 2.23 million square feet of warehousing facilities in 48 strategic global operations. Avnet's Logistics Solution Centers ship more than 32,000 line items per day for 300 suppliers and 100,000 customers in 70 countries. He is a corporate officer, member of the Avnet Executive Board and reports to Avnet President and Chief Operating Officer Rick Hamada.
A 40-year veteran of the electronics industry, Mr. Smith previously served as senior vice president of warehousing and distribution worldwide for Avnet Logistics. Prior to that, he held the post of senior vice president and director of operations for Avnet Electronics Marketing Americas. He joined Avnet in 2000.
Mr. Smith began his career at Lear Siegler. He joined Marshall Industries in 1971 and held sales and marketing posts before being appointed vice president of operations in 1977. At Kierulff Electronics, he served from 1980 to 1987 as vice president of operations and vice president of Semiconductor Marketing.
In 1987, Mr. Smith joined Wyle's Electronics Marketing Group as vice president of operations and quality assurance. He was promoted to group executive vice president of operations and president of Liberty Contract Services in 1992. In January 1995, Mr. Smith was elected a corporate senior vice president with responsibility for information technology and value-added operations. He was elected executive vice president a year later. He served as chief executive officer of Atlas Services North America, an LLC of VEBA Electronics Group, from 1998 to 2000.
Mr. Smith frequently serves as an outside speaker on industry topics ranging from international standards for the reduction of hazardous substances to physical security and transportation.
In 2007, he was named to the prestigious list of Provider Pros to Know from Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine, which annually recognizes executives who have personally helped raise the profile and increase the importance of Supply Chain as a strategic enterprise function.
Mr. Smith is a graduate of the Executive Program at the UCLA Graduate School of Management. He served in the United States Marine Corp, is a Vietnam veteran and is currently a member of the board of directors of ICAN, an Arizona based community service organization.
