September 27, 2004 - Avnet Ranked No. 3 on InformationWeek 500; Great Strides in Supply Chain Innovation Catapult the Company near Top of the List

PHOENIX -- Avnet Inc. (NYSE:AVT), a leading global distributor of electronic components and computer products, today announced it is ranked No. 3 on the InformationWeek 500 list of the nation's best users of information technology. Moreover, the company is the only one in its industry ranked in the Top 100.

"This year, we did something a little different. While we're still providing a detailed source of IT budget data and a listing of 500 innovative companies, we've segmented the best in class through a ranking of the top 100," said Stephanie Stahl, editor in chief at InformationWeek. "These companies show even more distinction with their business-technology strategies. For most, efficiency and productivity is top-notch, they've raised the bar on corporate governance, embraced emerging technologies and developed new technology strategies aimed at revenue generation, new business opportunities and customer service."

Selected primarily for the efforts of its Global Information Solutions (GIS) group, formed to enhance the flow of information between the company, its customers and suppliers, Avnet was recognized for reducing the time taken to generate quotes for customers from half a day to 20 minutes.

"Avnet Global Information Solutions continually seeks to develop systems and solutions that create a strategic competitive advantage for Avnet," said Ed Kamins, chief information officer at Avnet. "Our philosophy is that we must be easy to do business with, via the most reliable infrastructure in the industry. Our position on the InformationWeek 500 demonstrates that we are achieving both -- thanks to the efforts of many talented, hard-working IT employees.

"Avnet's business leaders also played an important role -- they had the foresight and commitment to use information technology to help them better serve their customers," Kamins continued. "Their belief that we can accelerate customer success through the use of innovative technology is pivotal."

For 16 years, the InformationWeek 500 has tracked the technology practices of America's most innovative companies, documenting their business technology strategies, investments and administrative practices. To participate in the study, Avnet completed a comprehensive qualifying application that detailed management priorities, technology strategies, staffing initiatives and budget plans. The company is one of three winners profiled in the Sept. 20 issue of the technology industry publication.
